The town of Mammoth Lakes is located in the heart of California's eastern Sierra Nevada mountain range, in Mono County. Mammoth Lakes is 325 miles north of Los Angeles, about the same distance east of San Francisco, and about 164 miles south of Reno, Nevada.
By automobile, Mammoth Lakes can be reached via U.S. Highway 395 from the north and south. From the east and west, it can be reached via Interstate 80 and Hwy 50. State Highways 120 and 108 are open only in the summer months.

The town of Mammoth Lakes sits at an altitude of 7,800 feet. The surrounding mountains rise to elevations in excess of 12,000 feet.
Approximately 7,093 people reside in the area of Mammoth Lakes year-round. During the peak winter season, the population has been known to swell over 35,000.
During the summer, at an average temperatures reach 75-80 degrees for a high and seldom dips below 40 at a low. Winter temperatures reach averages of 30-40 degrees at a high and 10-20 degrees at a low, with mostly sunny skies.
Snowfall at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area averages 385 inches annually.
There are more than 8,500 rental units in Mammoth Lakes, capable of accommodating various sized groups. These include condominiums, hotels, motels, lodges, hotel condominiums, bed & breakfasts, and cabins.
With more than 50 restaurants and lounges in town, Mammoth Lakes offers a wide variety of menus. Traditional American, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, German, Italian, Thai and French cuisine are all available. There is a restaurant in town that can satisfy any palate or budget.
The majority of Mammoth's retail shops and stores are located in a variety of shopping plazas: The Sierra Center Mall, Old Mammoth Mall, Main Street Plaza, Minaret Village Mall, Sherwin Plaza, the Premium Outlet Mall and The Village at Mammoth. Items of every kind can be found in town, from gourmet wines, designer clothes and sporting equipment to local art, jewelry and home furnishings.
A free shuttle service provided by Mammoth Mountain Ski Area provides transportation between the ski area and the town of Mammoth Lakes during the winter months only. There is a complimentary shuttle bus to the Devils Postpile National Monument during the summer months. The town of Mammoth Lakes has a free shuttle service during the spring, summer and fall months. The town of Mammoth Lakes also has a free trolley service that runs throughout town during summer months only.

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, one of the country's largest, is located just five miles from town.
June Mountain Ski Area is located approximately 20 miles from the town of Mammoth Lakes in June Lake.

Mammoth Lakes is located in the Inyo National Forest, part of the Mammoth Ranger District. The town is surrounded by acres of forest and is bordered by the Ansel Adams and John Muir Wilderness Areas. Yosemite National Park's eastern entrance, Hwy 120/Tioga Pass (closed in winter), is located just 45 minutes from the town of Mammoth Lakes and approximately 2 ½ hours to the valley floor.

Top-rated Mammoth Ski and Snowboard School offers skiing, snowboarding, Telemark School lessons and special clinics to help skiers and snowboarders of all levels improve their skills. Packages include private or group lessons, early bird lessons, first time beginners packages and more advanced level classes. Mammoth has two learning centers where instructors specialize in working with kids: Woollywood at Main Lodge and Canyon Kids at Canyon Lodge.
